Aminophylline Benefits and Dosage

Aminophylline has benefits for preventing and treating several symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Mainly due to the following conditions:

Aminophylline works by relaxing and opening the narrowed airways in the lungs. That way, air can flow to and from the lungs without obstruction, and the breath feels easier.

The dose of this drug can be different for each person, depending on age and conditions experienced. There are also dosage forms of aminophylline that are oral (taken by mouth) and some are injections (intravenous).

The following doses of aminophylline oral tablet form, to treat shortness of breath due to asthma, bronchitis, or COPD:

      • Adult: Initial dose 225–450 mg, taken 2 times a day. Dosage starts from the lowest, then gradually increase if necessary.
      • Children aged 6 years and over: The initial dose is 10 mg/kg, taken 2 times a day. In chronic cases, the dose used is 11–18 mg/kg, 2 times a day.

Meanwhile, the dosage of aminophylline for shortness of breath, in the form of injections is as follows:

      • Adult: Initial dose of 5 mg/kg or 250–500 mg, given by infusion over 20–30 minutes. The maximum dose is 25 mg per minute.
      • Children 6 months–9 years: The initial dose is the same as the adult dose. Followed by a maintenance dose of 1 mg/kg body weight per hour.
      • Children 10–16 years: The initial dose is the same as the adult dose. Followed by a maintenance dose of 0.8 mg/kgBW per hour.

Aminophylline injectable dosage forms should only be given by a doctor or medical officer. The dosage may vary, depending on many factors and the doctor’s assessment of the condition.

While on treatment with this medicine, caution should be exercised when driving, operating machinery, or engaging in other hazardous activities. This drug can cause dizziness or drowsiness.

Take aminophylline according to the dose recommended by the doctor. Avoid changing the dose or changing the timing of the daily dose. Do not change the brand, generic form, or formulation (tablets, capsules, liquid) of aminophylline that you take without your doctor’s approval. Different brands or formulations may require different dosages.

Avoid eating too much baked or grilled food. Because, this can change the dose of aminophylline you need.

Avoid consumption of caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and cola. Aminophylline is chemically related to caffeine, and you may experience some side effects if you consume too much caffeine.
