On Monday, the 17-year-old Blackpool forward came out freely, turning into the first straightforwardly gay male footballer in Britain to do as such while still playing since Fashanu in 1990.

Following Daniels’ declaration, which had been welcomed with widespread support, posts made by Ekpiteta from 2012 and 2013 containing homophobic tones were featured.

Ekpiteta, 26, subsequently erased the offending posts and on Tuesday evening issued an unreserved conciliatory sentiment expressing lament for his actions 10 years ago ‘which in no way mirror the values I hold now’.

‘Today, social media posts I made in 2012 and 2013 have been featured,’ the defender said in a statement on Twitter.

‘I need to wholeheartedly apologize for the offensive and totally improper language I used, and for the sentiments I expressed.

‘As a footballer, and in the years spent in work, before I turned into a professional player, I’ve been lucky to have worked with a wide and diverse scope of individuals. All through this period, I have created and developed as a person.

‘Yesterday, I was pleased with Jake and all required at Blackpool FC for what is a gigantically positive second for football overall.

‘I’m embarrassed by the comments I made as a 17-year-old, almost 10 years ago, which in no way mirror the values I hold now or the beliefs I have as a person or as a colleague.

‘Football needs to be where everybody can go ahead and be consistent with themselves, and I am upset that the comments I previously made suggest otherwise.

‘I assume complete ownership for these posts, and I am sorry.’
