The Australian Information Commission (OAIC) office said the Canberra-based Internet 2.0 security company has released a report showing that social network TikTok checks the location of users’ devices at least every 1 hour. The app also repeatedly requests access to the phonebook, even if the user initially refuses it, and will repeat it until access is granted.
In addition, the location system of the TikTok application is also automatically activated in other active applications and all applications downloaded on the user’s electronic device. TikTok also requires users to provide access to a wider range of applications that are required.
An OAIC spokesperson said the agency was investigating the privacy issues raised in the Internet 2.0 report, to see if TikTok violated Australian regulations.
The OAIC said technology platforms and applications operating in Australia must be transparent in how they handle user data and protect their privacy, especially for vulnerable users such as children. and may only collect information reasonably necessary to facilitate the delivery of services.

A TikTok representative in Australia said it had contacted the OAIC to explain the inaccuracies and errors in the Internet 2.0 report, and promised to provide the OAIC with complete and accurate information.
In response, the Internet 2.0 Company announced it had reviewed responses from Tiktok to the company’s report and found that the social network had conflicting interpretations of its own source code and privacy policy.
The OAIC is the national information and privacy regulator. This unit operates completely independently. Therefore, the results of the OAIC investigation are not subject to any government regulatory agency or political party in Australia.
Australian Senator James Paterson welcomed the OAIC’s review of TikTok.
He said the privacy and cybersecurity issues recently exposed in Australia were relatively serious.
The results of the OAIC investigation will form the basis for Canberra to further promote action plans to prevent high-tech intrusions, which affect people’s privacy and information.
